چکیده

For FEL (Free Electron Laser) complex used at the Duke University, pulse generators (kickers) of Injection, Extraction and Generator of injection into a big ring have been developed and built. As fast switches TPI-type thyratrons (PSS pseudospark switches) have been employed. In contrast to other pseudospark switches the TPI-thyratrons are capable of operating in circuits with grounded cathode, which offers lifetimes up to 20 000 hours. The thyratrons can be considered as alternative to wellknown switches, including hot cathode hydrogen thyratrons and up-to-date power solid state switches, whereas being more compact and cost-effective. The absence of hot cathode provides for turn-on time of the TPIs about 3÷5 ns in the modes with thousands-amperes peak currents and sub-nanosecond jitter. The results of over 1.5 years of the pulse generators service are presented.

Development of a Multigap-Pseudospark Switch for the PFN of the SIS100/300 Kicker Magnet Pulse Generator

In Erlangen multigap Pseudospark switches are under development to meet the requirements of the pulse forming network (PFN) for the SIS100/300 kicker magnets which are: hold-off voltage > 70 kV, peak current of ~ 6 kA and pulse duration of up to 6 μs. In the final phase of development a three-gap switch will be used. As reliable triggering is a key problem, different trigger methods were invest...

A 10 GS/s Distributed Waveform Generator for Sub-Nanosecond Pulse Generation and Modulation in Standard Digital CMOS

A distributed waveform generator is presented for sub-nanosecond pulse generation in UWB impulse radios. It timeinterleaves multiple digital pulse generators, and uses an on-chip transmission line for wideband pulse combining. Compared to other UWB pulse generation and shaping solutions, it is low power and fully reconfigurable. A 10-tap, 10GS/s prototype was implemented in standard digital CMO...

Pseudospark Switch Development for the LHC Extraction Kicker Pulse Generator

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, has started construction of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a superconducting accelerator that will collide protons at a center of mass energy of 14 TeV from the year 2005 onwards. The kicker magnet pulse generators of the LHC beam extraction system require fast high power switches. One possible type is the pseudospark switch (PSS) which has ...

6450 nm wavelength tissue ablation using a nanosecond laser based on difference frequency mixing and stimulated Raman scattering.

A four-stage laser system was developed, emitting at a wavelength of 6450 nm with a 3-5 ns pulse duration, < or = 2 mJ pulse energy, and 1/2 Hz pulse repetition rate. The laser system successfully ablated rat brain tissue, where both the collateral damage and the ablation rate compare favorably with that previously observed with a Mark-III Free-Electron Laser.

Two-color FEL amplifier for femtosecond-resolution pump-probe experiments with GW-scale X-ray and optical pulses

Pump-probe experiments combining pulses from a X-ray FEL and an optical femtosecond laser are very attractive for sub-picosecond time-resolved studies. Since the synchronization between the two independent light sources to an accuracy of 100 fs is not yet solved, it is proposed to derive both femtosecond radiation pulses from the same electron bunch but from two insertion devices. This eliminat...
